Furman vs. Western Carolina

Furman vs. Western Carolina

The Game: Furman vs. Western Carolina

Last Week: The Fighting Football Paladins played a hard-fought game but lost 34-27 when Wofford scored a touchdown with 49 seconds left in the game. The loss dropped Furman's record to 2-7.

Are We Any Good? Again, better than the 0-6 start, but also not great.

Opposing Team's Mascot: The Catamounts. Catamount is an umbrella term for various wild cats like cougars or lynx. Interestingly, Western Carolina is the second school Furman has played this year whose mascot used to be Teachers. Catamount is a fine nickname. It is unique enough. But it could have been so much cooler. The co-finalist alongside Catamount? Mountain Boomers, which is a squirrel. Why did they not go with Mountain Boomers? That is such a missed opportunity.

Et cetera:
-This is Furman's last home game of the season and thus senior day. Among those seniors? QB Reese Hannon, who is now the all time career passing yardage leader in Furman history and is 5 TDs from the career passing touchdown record. Preseason All-American Safety (and former Spanish student of E.A. Cox) Trey Robinson, who had a career high 15 tackles and a forced fumble last week. Wide receiver Andrej Suttles, who is 20 receiving yards away from breaking Adam Mims' career mark. It's a shame those guys only won a single conference championship.

-The Paladins lead the series with Western Carolina 29-12-2. However the Catamounts have won the previous two contests including a 48-10 victory in the 'Whee last year. I hate they won by that much buy I like referring to Cullowhee, NC as the 'Whee.

Anything else? Go Paladins!
